Our January has been pretty rough! For the first 2 weeks Colton slept through the night only twice! So I finally took him in to the dr thinking it was an ear infection, but it was just 4 TEETH coming through! He's been gnawing on everything since September and now he's finally getting the last of his teeth! Hooray - except there are still the 2 year old molars to look forward too. :)

He had his 18 month checkup and I had been concerned for a while that he wasn't hearing normally - for example he has some toys that have music that he puts right up to his ears and he still doesn't have any words! We work on "mama" and "dada" everyday. So the first question the doctor asks is, "How many words does he know?" So I was able to explain my concerns and she explained that sometimes they can only hear certain tones, etc... and that we should schedule a hearing test (they're going to put headphones and electrodes on him to measure brain wave activity ? - that's how they can tell if he's hearing something or not) She also wanted to have him do a speech evaluation which I think is funny considering he's not going to be doing much speaking - ha ha - so that is scheduled for next month at Phoenix Children's Hospital. I'm interested to see what comes of it...
Now, with all of that said, as you can see from the video below we know he can hear and understand when we ask him if he wants to go to timeout and he shakes his head no. He just cracks us up. At his 18mo check up he got 5 immunizations (4 different shots) and that afternoon he had a fever (as predicted) we gave him tylenol and motrin for that day and into the next day. The next night his fever spiked to 106! So we took him to an Urgent Care where he was diagnosed with pnemonia! Yeah, we were shocked - he wasn't even coughing. So two more sleepless nights later and 4 more doses of antibiotics and we finally got our little man back to his usual hyper self!
See what I mean when I say that January was a bad month! (knock on wood since it's not over yet :)

Sorry for the rough month. I have found kids tend to have many no good sleep periods through their young lives. Hopefully this period is over for awhile. I hope everything goes well with the hearing test!
Marina had a "speech" test when she was 16 months old. At that time they said she could communicate & understand us like an 8 month old ... exactly how long we had had her at that time. (Just shows she wasn't spoken to enough in the orphanage.) But they'll see what sounds he makes & one of the biggest things they probably look for at this age is that he can understand you, which is looks like he can, at least when time-out & bedtime come up. :) Marina ended up having a theropist in our home once a week for a couple hours ... it was great & definitely the highlight of her week. She absolutely ADORED the lady who came to our house. It was a good experience.

Wow - 106 fever! That is scary. Lauren had 104.7 in Dec. and that freaked me out. I am glad he is over it and feeling a lot better finally. And I know what you are going through witht he speech. Lauren struggles with her speech but after having her hearing tested we know that is not the problem. She is getting so much better though now that she goes to speech once a week. She loves it and it has made a huge difference.
Well at least the dr. listened to you and you get to get it checked out. Nobody can understand riley and when i got her speech checked the guy said she was fine because he could understand her one word answers but he said you can't really understand the more words she says in a row. Gee thanks buddy! isn't that kinda important? oh well I will have her checked again in a few months. On the hearing side of things, i thought seth couldn't hear forever (my seth not yours! ha ha!) so when i got him checked he has fluid behind his ear drums and that makes the ear drum not move so it pretty much sounds like people are talking underwater. which would explain why he can kinda understand us when he knows we are talking to him. so I think we are getting tubes next month. anyway good luck w/ your tests and keep us posted! That is no fun! You must have not been able to relax at all. Brock had gotten above the 106 fever as well and he had to have chest x-rays for pneumonia too (he wasn't coughing either, but it turned out he did not have pneumonia). I'm anxious to hear how Colton's hearing tests go. Hope February is a better month for you!
Okay, YES! I can see why January was a bad month! You're definately a trooper! I'm always so impresssed with your positive attitude! I AM jealous though, that your son is almost done with all his teeth, but that Mateus has yet to go through that! I'm not looking forward to it! Okay, so let me know if I can do anything to help out!
